DAC 1st Metropolitan Trophy Race 22 October 2022
DAC 1st Metropolitan Trophy Race 22 October 2022
Dobroyd Aquatic Club Tasars
Point Score 7
So far, the best day of the season, wind, rain and fire, kicked off the Tasar NSW Metro Trophy series at Dobroyd. 15 – 23 knots from the North East, a small drizzle of rain then Sun shine.
The DAC committee met and decided on a NE course, the wind came down from the bridge straight to the club house. It was also decided for a start and finish of the club house.
Nine Tasars contested the Metro trophy. “Faking Clever”, Kerry and Mike, “Tango” Andrew and Kirsty from Woollahra S.C, “Vivace”, Brad and Jenny from Georges River S.C, “Tasered Twice” Gavin and Laurie from Balmoral S.C. With DAC club Tasars Grant and Fiona “Czechmate”, Matt Rafferty “Banjo”, Anton and Nick “Prime Suspect”, Rob and Alex “Usain Boat” and Mark and Ruby (then Mick) “Wonatewonate”.
Tasar flag up, 5 minutes to go and 9 Tasars jostling for a position on the line. Brad and Jenny in Vivace had the start, sailing on port at the flag end with Czechmate on port at the starters boat, and all others in between.
With a rising wind Wonatewonate did a quick formula one stop for a crew change to a beefier substitute Mick (when no-one was looking) and began steaming up the course in hot pursuit of the fleet.
After passing Rodd Island on the west side and tacking up the first work Czechmate was second to Vivace, but not for long. Faking Clever picking some good shifts on the eastern shore passing Czechmate. Rounding the first mark was Vivace, Faking Clever, Czechmate, Banjo and Tasared Twice all within a boat length or two. Tango close behind. Prime Suspect missed the start but was gaining metres quickly. Usain Boat and Wonatewonate a distance behind.
The first 4 Tasars stay quite close until the third lap where Vivace changed gear and increased their lead. There was a great tussle going on with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Banjo having local knowledge caught up to Tasared Twice and Faking Clever.
Tango managed to pass Czechmate on the second work to the bridge. Czechmate catching on the runs but unable to pass. Usain Boat and Wonatewonate were further back.
The wind increasing through the afternoon and the northeast course saw a great reach across Rodd point.
While Vivace won comfortably, the final leg became an exciting battle for 2nd spot with Tasared Twice, Faking Clever and Banjo neck-to-neck at the finish line.
And if that wasn’t exciting enough, after finishing Usain Boat unsuccessfully tried dredging the mud flats with its centreboard requiring a deliberate capsize to unjamb it from the case. Ouch.
3:16:17 — Vivace
3:19:55 — Faking Clever
3:19:57 — Tasared Twice
3:19:58 — Banjo
Yep 3 seconds between them
3:20:29 — Prime Suspect
3:21:10 — Tango
3:21:19 — Czechmate
3:29:09 — Usain Boat
3:31:26 — Wonatewonate
A BBQ was held upstairs at the club house for all DAC members and the Tasar guests.
Wind, rain and fire. Fire!
We had a drizzle of rain while rigging and the wind came in. Fire, we can talk about that at the presentation day.
DAC put on a great day and the 9 Tasars had some close racing. A fantastic start to the Metropolitan Trophy Series. Tomorrow Georges River Sailing Club!
